The "Z+Alpha Generation" is rapidly rising in the consumer market. What trends will this digital-native generation, with a massive impact on the content culture, create in the future? Join the conversation between pop columnist Kim Tae-hoon and Ho Yeong-seong, director of the DAEHAK NAEIL 20s Research Institute, as they explore these developments.
The Dissolution of Gen MZ?! Here comes the "Z+Alpha Generation!"
The combination of Millennials and Generation Z, previously bundled together as the Generation MZ, has now diverged, and the content market leader Generation Z has converged with the emerging Generation Alpha, giving rise to the term "Z+Alpha Generation." Generation Z refers to those born from the 1995 through the mid-2010s, while Generation Alpha spans the early 2010s to the early 2020s. Compared to Generation Z, whose characteristics are relatively well-defined, Generation Alpha is still at a stage where it is premature to ascribe a definitive description.

K-Content is creating new business models across various industries. Among them, "MD (Merchandise)," also referred to as "goods," is steadily evolving regardless of genre. Let's delve into the conversation between pop columnist Kim Tae-hoon and Han Da-hye, a Consumer Trend Analysis Center researcher, as they discuss content merchandise that sometimes generates more buzz than the programs themselves, thanks to their rarity and unique charm.
The Popularity of "Goods" that Grew Alongside Idol Groups
What is "Content MD?" They are commonly referred to as "goods" and represent products designed for fans of brands or personalities. Products like posters and photocards emerged alongside the debut of idol groups in the 1990s, and the merchandise culture has steadily evolved. Nowadays, it has become an essential presence in the fields of content and entertainment.
Recently, some fans have become proactive producers and creators, beyond artist-specific "fandoms," who make and sell products themselves. Furthermore, merchandise is now produced in various cultural contents, expanding its scope to become a lifestyle enjoyed by not only specific fans but also a diverse range of customers.

A Studio Dragon representative remarked, “Based on the user demographics of Prime Video, viewers across Asia and the West are all contributing to the global rise of Marry My Husband. Especially in Western regions where K-dramas of stronger genres tend to receive more love, Marry My Husband is showing exceptional popularity as a romance-fantasy series. We anticipate this show to expand the K-drama viewership.”
Marry My Husband airs every Monday and Tuesday evening on tvN in Korea. The series is available for streaming internationally on Prime Video.

KCON, which has been a force in the spread of K-pop around the world, is a K-culture festival combining masterfully produced K-pop concerts with a convention where fans can experience every aspect of Korean culture – from music and fashion, to television and food. KCON began in the United States in 2012 and has since been held in Japan, United Arab Emirates, France, Mexico, Australia, Thailand, and Saudi Arabia. Over the past 12 years, it has amassed an attendance figure of around 1.65 million in 9 countries.
Last year, KCON toured four regions: Thailand (March), Japan (May), Los Angeles (August), and Saudi Arabia (October). KCON LA 2023 was one of KCON’s biggest events, holding three full shows over the course of the festival’s weekend. These events set new records by attracting the largest on-site audiences ever.
Joon-beom Sim, Head of Music Entertainment at CJ ENM said, “KCON has not only promoted artists’ global expansion, but also led small and medium-sized businesses to advance overseas, and has become a festival venue where K-culture and K-lifestyle can be promoted and experienced. The 2024 Visionary honorees KANG FULL, Kim Yong-hoon, Ryu Seung-ryong, Monika, and UHM JUNG HWA attended the event to receive the awards. Also, producer Choi Jung-nam and choreographers Lip J and Hyojin Choi from the “STREET WOMAN FIGHTER” series, and numerous CJ ENM representatives joined the 2024 Visionary Awards & Open House to celebrate the special moment of Korean entertainment together.
The motif behind the theme of the ceremony was the Dondeokejon Hall, the recently revived historic building within Deoksugung Palace used for diplomatic purposes during the Korean Empire era. Key figures of the present gathered at a place that resembles a symbol of the past to discuss the future of entertainment.
Miky Lee, Vice Chairwoman of CJ ENM, remarked in her congratulatory message, “The creators and artists honored as the ‘2024 Visionary’ are the key players who showed the world that K-content is striving despite extended economic uncertainty. As a global IP powerhouse and a huge supporter of these creators and artists, CJ ENM will continue to provide them opportunities and inspiration.”
Upon receiving the awards, the honorees of “2024 Visionary” also shared their thoughts on the roots of originality, their own visionaries, and their insight on the future of K-entertainment. Writer and cartoonist KANG FULL chose work ethic as his source of inspiration, and Ryu Seung-ryong chose unpredictable reactions from audiences as his own visionary. UHM JUNG HWA expressed her gratitude as she said, “Today I realized that I made the right decision when I took the path that brought me excitement and passion,” and Monika remarked, “As I’m being showered with compliments, I’m getting more determined to become a good person who can bring positive influence. I will cherish this miraculous moment as I move forward into my future.”
Koo Chang-gun, CEO of CJ ENM, said “The Visionary Awards does not end with the ceremony, but rather, it begins from it. As the ‘visionaries’ are honored for their originality and influence, the award presentation signals the beginning of new conversations and adventures. This ceremony marks the start of the year where constructive feedback and ideas are exchanged to propose a vision for K-entertainment.”
Ahead of the awards ceremony, CJ ENM held the first “2024 Visionary Conference” on January 5th to share with members of the CJ ENM company insight and inspirations for the “next entertainment” they will be crafting. The conference covered the latest industry trends, shifts in entertainment businesses with the rise of AI, and various inspirational sessions that can prompt the next potential visionaries.
Director of Netflix original series Mask Girl (2023) Kim Yong-hoon grew his dream of becoming a creator while he was part of CJ ENM’s Film Business Division. Sharing his experience, Kim Yong-hoon said, “Some say I got lucky, but you need to have courage for luck to find you. An adventure like casting three actresses for one character as in Mask Girl was possible because I had the courage not to conform.”
At the conference, CJ ENM also introduced “LAIVE,” the AI songwriting service to be launched by its investment partner “Pozalabs.” The conference was followed by workshop sessions where members of CJ ENM could learn how to use LAIVE’s AI technology and also discuss what is next for entertainment content and culture.

The seven honorees of “2024 Visionary” are as follows (in alphabetical order):
KANG FULL, Kim Yong-hoon, Monika, Ryu Seung-ryong, Song Hye-kyo, Stray Kids, and UHM JUNG HWA.
Actress Song Hye-kyo and director Kim Yong-hoon inspired the entertainment industry and creators by expressing hyperrealistic stories that many people could resonate with. Song Hye-kyo was widely acclaimed for her acting transformation in the Netflix original series The Glory, produced by CJ ENM’s premium storyteller group Studio Dragon, in which she portrayed a former victim of school violence seeking revenge. With The Glory: Season 1 ranking top 3 in Netflix’s biannual engagement report for the first half of 2023, the series was recognized for raising social awareness of school violence.
Mask Girl, the Netflix series produced by the CJ ENM subsidiary studio Bonfactory, tackled discrimination, sexuality, beauty standards, and numerous social issues. Director Kim Yong-hoon’s creative approach and artistic direction, casting three actresses to each represent the different facets of a single character, positioned him as the rising shape-shifter of the industry.
UHM JUNG HWA and Stray Kids are unrivaled artists who showed their own interpretation of what it means to be unique in ways relevant to current times and trends. A legendary figure both as an actress and a singer, UHM JUNG HWA proved her status as a multilayered entertainer in the JTBC TV series Doctor Cha and tvN reality show Dancing Queens on the Road. She also successfully wrapped up her first concert in 24 years, showcasing her identity as a prominent female solo artist in Korea.
Music group Stray Kids radiates a global influence that extends far outside of Korea, reaching many fans across the globe. Topping the Billboard 200 chart with all four albums released since 2022 and scoring their first Billboard Hot 100 entry with LALALALA in 2023, their accomplishments as a self-produced group with an exceptional musical identity are setting new global milestones for the K-pop industry.
Author KANG FULL, actor Ryu Seung-ryong, and choreographer Monika proposed newness that led to the target audience expansion. As key figures of the Disney+/Hulu series Moving, author KANG FULL and actor Ryu Seung-ryong established new genres and characters with their originalities. Author of the original webtoon series, KANG FULL made his debut as a screenwriter with the series rendition, proposing a new genre of “K-superhero series” with a slow but convincing, people-centric story.
Ryu Seung-ryong is an actor with a boundless spectrum who breaks the boundaries of his character. Having starred in more than four Korean films that amassed more than 10 million audiences including Extreme Job and Miracle in Cell No. 7, Ryu Seung-ryong has positioned himself as an unparalleled actor in the Korean film industry.
Choreographer Monika starred in the STREET WOMAN FIGHTER series as a contestant in season 1 and returned as a judge in season 2. She is also the first choreographer to be honored as a “visionary.”
A CJ ENM representative remarked, “The ‘visionaries’ who introduced new outlooks with their unparalleled creativity and impact are not only triumphs of the industry but also the future of Korean entertainment. The environment for creating content is evolving rapidly with the development of IT technology. AI, or artificial intelligence, is the hottest topic discussed in the IT industry. However, is the emergence of AI in the content industry a threat or an opportunity? Let’s take a look at the conversation between pop columnist Kim Tae-hoon and digital media expert Kang Jeong-su on generative AI, which is said to be the future of Korean content.
Generative AI’s Appearance in the Content Industry
Recently, AI, especially the “Large Language Model (LLM)” or “Generative AI” technologies, has become the hottest topic in the IT industry. Generative AI, which refers to artificial intelligence that is capable of generating content, is currently emerging in various fields and is considered an innovative technology that will change the world significantly over the next decade.
Generative AI refers to AI technology that creates various contents, such as conversations, stories, images, videos, and music, when a user inputs a command. When the user inputs a specific command, an answer is derived accordingly. For example, we can obtain a desirable answer by specifying the who, what, when, where, and how, like the sentence, “Express the pleasant feelings of a woman on the beach in Bali through music.” The technology can be used in various ways, regardless of gender, age, or field of profession. Even virtual idol groups are being created with Generative AI.
AI Will Bring Diversity to Creativity
Artificial intelligence is contributing significantly to content creation activities. When writing a novel with Generative AI, anyone can obtain the desired results by inputting information such as the number of characters, each character’s personality, genre, and composition. Inputting a more specific and detailed command enhances the quality of the content and increases utilization. Therefore, it is suggested that the language we need to learn in the future is a “technical language” used to give commands to AI.
CJ ENM Utilizes the Endless Advancements in AI
Recently, there has been a trend of AI cover songs generated by mimicking the voice of specific individuals, such as NewJeans’ “Hype Boy” sung in the voice of Bruno Mars. We're also seeing a rise in the number of cases where AI produces music for movies or dramas with such new technologies.
In Korea, CJ ENM actively used AI to create music for the programs MBTI vs. Saju, Expedition to Maya, and Europe Outside Your Tent, in collaboration with Pozalabs, an AI music generation startup. Along with the use of AI-generated background music, Hollywood has been replacing movie actors with digital humans and utilizing deepfake technologies.
Like so, Generative AI is creating an inflection point in the content industry. Technology has advanced to an extent where anyone can create with world-famous figures. Recently, Paramount Pictures recreated Harrison Ford in his younger years through a de-aging technology in a new series of Indiana Jones. Digital technology is already being used abroad in various ways, such as recreating the deceased as AI humans using images from when they were alive and featuring them in new movies. However, as technology advances faster than our value judgment, the possible damages caused by deepfake technology must be discussed continuously.
Is AI an Opportunity for the Content Industry? Or is it a Threat?
Generative AI is already being widely used for content creation. What is the content industry’s perspective on AI? First, entrepreneurs are generally showing positive reactions because AI significantly reduces production costs. Recently, Hollywood has been actively utilizing AI to reduce the need to re-shoot scenes by using AI to fix scenes during post-production or create new scenes that weren’t actually filmed.
On the other hand, the copyright industry and creators see the introduction of AI as a threat. This year, SAG-AFTRA carried out a massive strike, making history as the first strike of humanity against artificial intelligence. In particular, writers demanded the prohibition of AIs being educated with their creations to prevent copyright infringement. The fact that such a strike was initiated in the content creation industry proves that artificial intelligence is widely used in the field.
If the current law fails to solve the side effects arising from ambiguous standards for copyright and creation, a new discussion on copyright will be necessary. Copyright laws must also be restructured in pace with the development and popularization of technology. Since copyright is essential for all artists, the compensation system for “real creators” should be the utmost priority in discussions to solve the issues.
Will All Creators Vanish in the Future?
Will the development of AI leave no place for artists to stand? We can find the answer to that question in the movie Oppenheimer. Christopher Nolan, the director of Oppenheimer, is famous for avoiding the use of CGI in his movies. The nuclear explosion scene in Oppenheimer also drew much attention for not using CGI. Like so, emphasizing “humanness” in the AI and digital era can be a huge appeal to the viewers. Even if artificial intelligence continues to expand, top artists remain unaffected. And as technology advances, more people tend to seek humanness as a signal of value in the AI era.
Moreover, if we enter an era where content is mainly created by AI, not humans, fully human-made works created entirely by humans and filmed on-site without CGI may attract greater attention. In the future, films with the title “Human Only” may be treated as authentic reality blockbuster films.
How to Use AI While Protecting Rights
AI provides opportunities to those who utilize it, but it can be a threat to those who push it away. To coexist with AI, we must actively use it but also consider how to resolve its side effects. As technology advances, side effects are bound to follow. However, humanity has progressed steadily while resolving such issues. It is vital to solve and evolve from the issues posed by AI rather than unconditionally rejecting it out of fear of the side effects.
AI is a double-edged sword. Ultimately, those who use it wisely will be the winners. We hope to see creators respond to this with wisdom and look forward to a future where AI contributes positively to the development of the world.

King Of Karaoke: VS (Hereinafter Karaoke VS) became a hot topic by combining karaoke with survival to create a new type of audition. Let’s take a behind-the-scenes look into the production process shared by producers Park Chi-hun, Jung Woo-young, Hwang Doo-ha, and Kim Seong-pil, who say they never have a day off, handling everything from casting performers to filming and editing.
King Of Karaoke: VS Making Talk
Q. How did you come up with planning Karaoke VS?
Producer Jung Woo-young: We all love karaoke, so we go often. One day, we went to karaoke and realized that the music rankings on the karaoke’s popularity chart were entirely different from those from music streaming platforms. That’s when we realized that the songs people want to sing and listen to are different, and we decided to plan a program that people can watch and sing along to. The program aims to find true vocalists hidden in karaoke and help them develop musically.
Q. What is the process behind the program’s production?
Producer Jung Woo-young: We deliver the final version three hours before the show and prepare for the following episode immediately. The trailer must be released promptly, so we must start editing immediately.
Producer Hwang Doo-ha: Due to the nature of survival programs, there is no set date for the shoot, and we tend to shoot frequently according to the cast’s schedules. We not only have individual shoots but also separate reality shoots for each team. So, we shoot every now and then and edit throughout the week. (Laugh)
From tips for passing the audition to points to look out for!
Q. What are the production team’s tips for passing the auditions?
Producer Jung Woo-young: Around 5,000 people applied, and among them, only 400 to 500 were able to proceed into the first preliminary round. Most of them claimed to be good singers, so picking them with only their skills was difficult. We usually gave the tickets to those who were both good singers and talented performers.
Producer Park Chi-hun: Singing the songs of singers who appeared as judges actually became a negative factor. Since the original singer is the judge, the song is evaluated with stricter standards. For auditions, I recommend singing a song that isn’t too famous but has an impact.
Q. Were there any memorable participants?
Producer Jung Woo-young: Most participants had jobs irrelevant to music, such as corrections officers, physiotherapists, designers, lawyers, etc. I was impressed that people from all walks of life participated in realizing their hidden dreams. I commend them for challenging themselves sincerely. I don’t think I’d be able to do the same.
Q. What are some points to look out for when watching Karaoke VS?
Producer Jung Woo-young: We deliberately cast producers from different genres because, apart from just judging, providing the opportunity for participants to develop musically through training as teams is a notable factor of our program. It will be great to focus on the growth of the participants and the chemistry between the producers.
Producer Park Chi-hun: Since the participants are mostly ordinary people, they develop at different paces. A different person excels each time, depending on their respective styles and conditions. So, it’s entertaining to watch all the participants.
Producer Kim Seong-pil: For each mission, the producers would say, “Was this person this good?” They were fascinated. Just from this, you can tell there wasn’t a clear winner. Everyone had diverse charms to the point where it wouldn’t be weird regardless of whoever won.
King Of Karaoke: VS offers refreshing entertainment with a whole new audition method. The missions are becoming increasingly intense, and participants continue to improve. Who will win 100 million won and be named the best karaoke vocalist? Much love and attention will be appreciated until the end!
